I can’t get enough of this place. It seems so silly to go anywhere else when there’s everything I could ever want (well, not everything, but enough to keep me really interested and happy for at least as long as I’ll be living in New York). If you live here, or if you visit here, and you like beer, at all, please please please do yourself a favor and go to this place. The bartenders are really knowledgable- it’s nice to be able to say this is what i’m in the mood for and get a perfect suggestion and a taste. And they have opinions. Anyone who can refer to a group of bud-light-ordering-midtown-douche business men as assholes and get away with it is automatically my type of person. I hate to keep rambling, so I’ll make you a simple list of why you absolutely must must go to this bar.
1. Beer selection, obviously. With 70 taps, 160 bottles, and 2 casks, even picky people can find something to drink.
2. Tasting policy. It’s kind of intimidating to chose from so many beers if you haven’t had most of them, and from my experience, the bartenders are pretty good about letting you try a taste if you seem unsure. Take advantage of this, unless you want to be the drunk asshole who was there last night, ordered several full pints, refused to taste them, drank 2 sips of each, and then left them on the bar. Taste, don’t waste!
3. Crowd. I’m sure it’s definitely dependent on the time that you go, but there’s a good number of chill, beer-loving people mixed in with the midtown crowd. I’d mention that it seems like a good place for meeting attractive business people, but there’s already an obnoxious amount of people there trying to do that.
4. Prices. Almost everything on draft is between 5 and 10 dollars. (might be everything) which is great for beers that other places mark up because they’re tasty and/or rare.
5. Kickass Bar Staff They aren’t overly friendly, they know what the hell their doing, and they don’t sacrifice quality of service for super speedy. There’s no throwing of bottles or anything like that. They seem to be real people, and talented. A+.
I thought I had more creative things to say about this place– then I got distracted and started watching Party Down. (which is great, by the way)
So just go, figure out for yourself that it’s awesome.
Also– something else awesome– another girl (with a bit more experience, but the same attitude) started a blog called Girls for the Advancement of Craft Beer Through Knowledge and Education. You should definitely check it out– she talks some serious beer lingo, and she’s funny.
Thanks for the plug!! It’s certainly appreciated. I hope you enjoy the site, we can definitely all learn from each other.
As for beers that "scare" some girls, there are plenty! In my experience, dark beers, barleywines, anything that can possibly be perceived as "heavy".
Also, I’m heading back east in July and I’ll be spending some time in NYC – so I’ll be checking back for good recommendations on beer bars for my trip!!
