Because girls like beer too

  1. Bierkraft

so, yes, i know i was gone for a little while, and that was kind of terrible of me, to leave with no notice like some bum guy your mom slept with about nine months before you were born who is a terrible father but your only father nonetheless. all of that bullshit out of the way, if you live in new york, go to bierkraft on 5th ave in Park Slope. its soooo good dude. their sandwiches are amazing, and the beer selection is really varied if not monstrous. Good advice, good growler prices, and good cheese. What else does a girl need in life? More coming soon, not like those postcards that your "dad"...

  2. Smuttynose IPA "Finest Kind"

A heads up: This is going to be a short review because the "i" key on my keyboard is no longer working and so i must copy and paste every single i. And thus i won't be capitalizing properly either. My apologies. Moving on.... In the past, i've ranted about not liking IPAs, based on their hoppy-ness. Older, wiser beer lovers warned me that someday, like a young child learning to eat their veggies, i'd come to love and appreciate the character and taste of hops, and take back all of my slanderous accusations of bitterness and imbalance. Well, they were right. Recently, i've had several...

  3. Nøgne Ø- Porter and Dark Horizon

I had both of these beers at yet another good ole Puck Fair Sunday Night extravaganza, where, once again, I went for just one beer with a friend and ended up with many more of both. After an easy, lighter opener, I split these one after the other with my friend Andrew and JP, the bartender. Good thing I took notes, these two alone are enough to knock anyone out for the night. First, the porter: This is a dark chocolate dreamboat. Take like the sexiest, darkest African man (or woman) you can picture, and imagine drinking them. While that imagery may not best communicate what I'm trying to say and...

  4. Beer Girl Heads South: SC Beers

While down in SC, in between all those tasty Miller Lites and Mich Ultras, I also sought out the best beer offered in Edisto, SC. While there were a few decent selections in the store, I wanted to be bold and daring and try some beers actually made in my little triangle state. Unfortunately, there are very few of these. Most of the SC breweries are split between Charleston and the Upstate, although I didn't get to check out the ones in the Greenville-Spartanburg area... I tried three beers from two breweries down in Charleston- unfortunately not the highly-recommended COAST brewery. Charleston...

  5. Miller Lite, Smirnoff Ice, and Other Terrible Beers I've Been Drinking out of Desperation

So, I'm at the beach, and, as I mentioned, no one here appreciates my good taste. They also like to give me a hard time about drinking good beer, and to shut everyone up, I decided I'd try one "normal" beer a day. Ugh. My condition is that I'm going to give these beers a review. A good, thorough examination which will scientifically (in the loose sense of the term) demonstrate their inferiority. My parents will also be reading this (Hi Mom! Hi Barron! Hi Lil' Bro!) We'll start with the worst and work up Miller Lite! I got like 3 sips into this beer with a "fresh-keeping-lid"...

  6. Sixpoint Bengali Tiger

I'm gonna go ahead and say something that I might later amend, but I believe that Sixpoint may be the best NYC brewery. This is of course just my very very humble opinion, but I've liked all of their brews just a little more than average, and I think they do well in a wide variety of styles, versus, say Brooklyn, whose heavier offerings rock and lighter brews suck. (no offense Brooklyn, you're not a total failure) I've also said in the past that I don't like hops. This is also proving to be false- I've found a lot of well balanced hop-heavy beers recently that are, in fact, awesome. Bengali Tiger...

  7. Sea Dog Apricot Wheat (and other Apricot Beers)

We have this beer on tap at Grey Dogs, so I tend to drink it during those long grueling 5-12 shifts. It's not great, it's not terrible, its just good. People order it a lot because it sounds refreshing, but honestly, we definitely have better stuff. In the glass it looks only average, not much of a head, and smells pretty much as expected (apricots, if you need a hint). Taste is also apricots, although there's a dryness at the end that doesn't fit and makes the beer finish on a bad note. (I actually had someone argue with me that it couldn't possibly contain alcohol because it tastes so much like...

  8. Samuel Adams Imperial Stout

So you know those situations where you're faced with only bad choices, and you try to pick the least terrible? That's why I tried this beer. I was at a shitty pizza place out in Queens, in need of a beer, and I tried this, thinking it might be bearable since I tend to like Imperial Stouts. Wrong, I couldn't get even 4 sips into this beer. The "dark, heavy flavors" were dominated by alcoholic burn and bitterness, not anything pleasant like the coffee and chocolate flavors advertised, that so many other stouts manage to work in with the heavy alcohol. The balance was entirely off, and I...

  9. Victory Golden Monkey

In honor of the Victory Brewing event I'm going to tomorrow night down at The Blind Tiger, I figured I'd write a little post about my good friend, the Golden Monkey. We have some rich history. About a year or so ago, my friend brought a six-pack of this to our apartment's weekly Blue Moon Chess Club (named so for the chess playing and beer drinking that inevitably turned into drinking games after everyone got too drunk to play chess). Long story short, these tasted so good after a long day of work that I was quite gone after two (it's 9.5% abv, in my defense) and have no idea of my state of mind...

  10. Shmaltz Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner

Wow, I'm impressed with my boss at Grey Dog's for putting this beer on tap (Hey Dave!) -- apparently its pretty rare and its surprisingly good. I haven't heard much critical acclaim for the coney island beers. Not much that's bad, but nothing like, hey you should try this. But maybe this will change things. It's quite good, a light refreshing summer beer. However, I did get pretty bored with the taste about halfway through. Also, I didn't take notes, and I drank it while cleaning, so all I know is that it's not really bitter, a little darker than a typical pilsner, and goes down easy (it goes down...

About This Blog

So my summer began with a fractured foot. Prohibited from doing any of my planned exciting athletic adventures, I began drinking and staying in a lot more (separately, not in an alcoholic fashion) and I figured, hey, maybe I'll write about beer, since it's all I'm living for right now. So here it is. A female-written, one-or-more-a-day journey through the world of beer. I don't claim to know everything about beer. I don't know 25%. I'll be learning as I go, and you'll be watching, and probably laughing or making angry comments about my ignorance. Whatever. Beer is not just about its alcohol content or hop level or blahblahblah. It's about the taste and the experience and the fun. So sit back, crack a cold one, and enjoy. Unless you like coors light, in which case get the hell out of here. Love, Beer Girl
