We have this beer on tap at Grey Dogs, so I tend to drink it during those long grueling 5-12 shifts. It's not great, it's not terrible, its just good. People order it a lot because it sounds refreshing, but honestly, we definitely have better stuff. In the glass it looks only average, not much of a head, and smells pretty much as expected (apricots, if you need a hint). Taste is also apricots, although there's a dryness at the end that doesn't fit and makes the beer finish on a bad note.
(I actually had someone argue with me that it couldn't possibly contain alcohol because it tastes so much like fruit. He also argued with me about carding him, despite the fact he looked fourteen. And about the price of the beer. He was not a nice person and I'm not sorry he didn't enjoy his beer.)
Despite the overwhelming apricot flavor, the beer isn't super sweet like a lambic, and there's not a heavy malt or hops flavor, so it ends up just tasting like watered down apricot soda. And it's only good really cold- once it warms up even the slightest bit it tastes terribly funky. Definitely better apricot beers out there- I've recommended a few below
Dogfish Head Aprihop - I know I've recommended this before, and with good reason, it's a tart, delicious, well-balanced version of fruit beer- one of the few I've had that strike a good balance in incorporating strong fruity flavor while keeping a strong beer foundation. It's a magical hybrid of a fruit beer and an IPA.
Pyramid Apricot Ale- A good apricot wheat beer, it's got tastes of both, and a smooth drinkability that makes it really nice no matter when you're drinking it. Definitely try and find it if you can, it's a good introduction to fruit beer.
So, there you have it, apricot beer. I'm currently experiencing that phenomenon when you write a word too many times and your brain quites recognizing it.
