Found a expat coffeeshop/bar/used bookstore with free wifi- what else do you need really? A .5L of fransiskaner dunkel is only 4€, same as bud or guineas but much tastier. So it’s 1:00 in the afternoon and I’m passing the afternoon drinking this beer and reading a really terrible but large (and therefore time-passing) book about a rich family with dark secrets who are vacationing on Bali. Yeah, it’s about as bad as it sounds. They have names like saffron and dick and are all in the fortune 500 club. I’ll probably still like it better than unbearable lightness of being.

But! Decent beer in a great little spot- apparently there’s also trivia night! Since it’s only 3 blocks from my apartment, I may be coming here quite a bit.

I went to delirium bar both nights I was in town, and while it was great and the beer selection was fabulous, it was crowded and touristy and the Belgian people I met kept recommending orval/duvel/chimay and I had to fight to get a recommendation for a beer I hadn’t tried before. The bartenders were fantastic though, and very helpful and I did have three great beers, whose names I will add when I look at the labels.
Sadly, it’ll probably be a while before I go back to Belgium- I wasn’t crazy about brussels, and I didn’t have a chance to do bruges or Ghent so…yeah. It’s kind of a sad feeling.

For a country that just legalized beer in 1989, Iceland has quite an impressive bar scene. The beer is all light and mostly not that flavorful but the standards Viking and gull both go down easy. Our first night out we went out around 12, it was still dusk, and ended up at a bar called english pub. Our quiet beer turned into quite a party when the table next to us – a handful of nowegian army guys- won 28 beers in three spins of the bar’s prize wheel. They invited us to join in. We won 8 more, and brought in some Americans and a German lady. And there was a French guy that lived right down the street from me in Brooklyn last year! Small small world we live in.
The beer was a lot less memorable than the company, but the scene is cool- people start to go out around 1, and prime time is 3-5. I haven’t seen anyone stumbling around at 8 am but it is a ghost town until noon or so- like the east village on a Sunday.

Tuesday I’m off to Amsterdam, where I plan on biking and drinking and relaxing, but I’m really saving up my liver for Brussels this weekend- I can’t wait for all that lovely lovely Belgian beer!

all of that bullshit out of the way, if you live in new york, go to bierkraft on 5th ave in Park Slope. its soooo good dude. their sandwiches are amazing, and the beer selection is really varied if not monstrous. Good advice, good growler prices, and good cheese. What else does a girl need in life?

More coming soon, not like those postcards that your "dad" promised he’d send.

A heads up: This is going to be a short review because the "i" key on my keyboard is no longer working and so i must copy and paste every single i. And thus i won’t be capitalizing properly either. My apologies.

Moving on…. In the past, i’ve ranted about not liking IPAs, based on their hoppy-ness. Older, wiser beer lovers warned me that someday, like a young child learning to eat their veggies, i’d come to love and appreciate the character and taste of hops, and take back all of my slanderous accusations of bitterness and imbalance. Well, they were right. Recently, i’ve had several ipa’s that are downright incredible, this being one of the most outstanding. (Stone ipa too, but that’s another day).

This beer is a nice golden color, with an aroma that’s like a forest- fresh and woodsy and flowery and citrusy all at the same time, but without dampness or animals. The taste is crisp, floral and bitter as hell. There’s a bit of bready malts, and a grapefruit-esque essence that gives a nice little pucker to the beer. i wouldn’t say the flavors are super complex but the beer is interesting throughout. Very drinkable, once you get past the bitterness, and at 6.9% abv, a good choice for almost any sort of drinking session.

Super annoyed by my lack of an i key. Drnk ths beer, end of story.

Love,

Beer Girl

So my summer began with a fractured foot. Prohibited from doing any of my planned exciting athletic adventures, I began drinking and staying in a lot more (separately, not in an alcoholic fashion) and I figured, hey, maybe I’ll write about beer, since it’s all I’m living for right now. So here it is. A female-written, one-or-more-a-day journey through the world of beer. I don’t claim to know everything about beer. I don’t know 25%. I’ll be learning as I go, and you’ll be watching, and probably laughing or making angry comments about my ignorance. Whatever. Beer is not just about its alcohol content or hop level or blahblahblah. It’s about the taste and the experience and the fun. So sit back, crack a cold one, and enjoy. Unless you like coors light, in which case get the hell out of here.

Love, Beer Girl

I had both of these beers at yet another good ole Puck Fair Sunday Night extravaganza, where, once again, I went for just one beer with a friend and ended up with many more of both. After an easy, lighter opener, I split these one after the other with my friend Andrew and JP, the bartender. Good thing I took notes, these two alone are enough to knock anyone out for the night.

First, the porter:

This is a dark chocolate dreamboat. Take like the sexiest, darkest African man (or woman) you can picture, and imagine drinking them. While that imagery may not best communicate what I’m trying to say and, in retrospect, is a little gross, the beer is anything but gross and definitely deserving of a better shout out. It tastes very roasted and toasty, with dark berry hints that impart fruitiness but not any overwhelming sweetness. There’s a good hit of cocoa and coffee, especially at the end, and a nice bitter note to balance it all out in the middle. It’s very drinkable, and you get a hint of alcohol, but only in an encouraging way. My verdict? Drink it. Responsibly? If you must. (just kidding, always drink responsibly, and take a cab if you have to. you can’t read my blog if you’re dead or in prison!)

Dark Horizon

Now this. This is a beer. For people who like to drink whiskey or sip other hard liquors. Primary, most outstanding feature of this beer, not necessarily it’s best or worst: 17.5% ABV. That’s right. more than most wine, and almost as much as Malibu rum. Actually, though, for having such a high alcohol, it’s really quite drinkable. I didn’t have any problem (of course, you know, I wasn’t too discerning by that point). It kind of tastes like a really dark, sweet coffee, with some drinking chocolate drizzled in. Oh, and a little burn. Everything about the beer is dark, color and flavors- molasses and roasted, toasted everything. I’d like to try it again, but at well over $20 a bottle in stores and even more in bars, it’s a bit out of my price range. Which is why it works out well that as a cute, young girl, free beer isn’t very hard to come by.
